Warfare
The securing of the borders in a vast empire
such as the Byzantine was, it was not an easy thing, particularly in a period
during which the conflicts with vicinal nations for the claim or the defense of
the territories has been a frequent phenomenon. Even though the residents of Byzantium, most of them
were farmers, didn’t want the war and wished for a quiet and peaceful life, the
emperors, on the other hand, knew that, for the survival of their state, a well organized and prepared for war army
was essential.
During the
education of the army, they emphasized on the character of the enemy, the
realization of an expedition or the defensive methods. The success in the field
of the battle is mainly based on the continuous practice of the soldiers and on
the application of the theory that refers to the military handbooks that are used
by the generals. Other factors that are important for the result of the battle are
the choice of the right time moment for the attack, the knowledge of the field/place
to attack, the knowledge about the enemy and his state, and also self-knowledge
of the soldiers regarding the advantages and their weaknesses too.
Although the development of the martial
technology is a continuous process, the diplomacy and the peaceful regulation
of the problems seems to be always the ideal solution for the confrontation of the
hostile wills of the vicinal nations.
