About Us

The European Centre of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments was established in Thessaloniki in 1997 as a non-profit organization supervised by the General Secretariat for Culture. The Centre is active abroad, in the Middle East, the Balkans and the Black Sea, where there are monuments that owe their existence to Byzantine culture or its influence. Its mission is to provide expertise and develop international partnerships to support projects concerning the restoration, maintenance and promotion of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments at the European and international level. Furthermore, the Centre is actively involved in managing European projects on cultural object documentation and digitization, as well as in compiling databases and creating networks and digital applications for Byzantine culture.

"Exploring the Byzantine World" provides targeted digital content showcasing Byzantine culture via interactive information services. The e-services it offers are designed to inform teachers, researchers, schoolchildren and interested members of the general public about monuments, personalities, historical events, achievements and aspects of daily life in Byzantium. All site content is viewable in both English and Greek.

The project contractor is the Centre for Cultural Informatics in the Information Systems Laboratory at the FORTH Institute of Computer Science. The Centre is a specialized unit that takes an interdisciplinary approach to covering the entire life cycle of cultural information and documentation procedures, with the ultimate aim of supporting the conservation, study and dissemination of cultural heritage.

"Exploring the World of Byzantium" was implemented as part of the “Digital Convergence” Operational Programme and Regional Operational Programmes for Macedonia & Thrace, Crete & the Aegean Islands, Thessaly, Central Greece & Epirus, and Attica.

Co-funded by Greece and the European Union.
